Something that all boxing fans can agree on it’s that there’s nothing better than a fighter who walks the walk and talks the talk in the ring. That’s the case with middleweight fighting phenom Edgar Berlanga, who will be looking to continue on his demolishing path to boxing stardom as he takes on against another great middleweight fighter in his own rights, Roamer Angulo. Now, as they get ready to rumble on Saturday night, in what has all the signs of being one of the best and toughest fights in Berlanga’s career, will he be able to continue on with his red-hot winning streak or will Angulo have something to say about it, handing Berlanga his first loss in his career?
If you as a boxing fan have had a chance to follow Edgar Berlanga’s career as a pro fighter then you probably noticed something right off the bat. This man can box the lights out of any opponent in a matter of minutes, if not seconds if he so wishes. With a 19-0 record that includes 16 knockouts, all of those coming in the first round of his fights, it’s no wonder why almost every time Berlanga has fought, the guy doesn’t even give fans a chance to blink or check the time, because the fight is already over. His knockout record has been one of the biggest stories in boxing in actuality but, when you look at his last three fights, there you see that even the biggest hype needs a dozing down every now and again to bring everything back to reality.
After 16 straight knockout wins, Demond Nicholson, Marcelo Coceres and Steve Rolls all did what apparently seemed impossible. Even in losing efforts for the three of them they were able to take the fight to Berlanga and make him work over time, in scenarios where Berlanga’s boxing issues could be seen. While the man carries a rocket for a punch when it comes to delivering knockout blows, his lack of jabbing abilities and his faulty footwork have come to shine as the dark spots in his boxing style. For a fighter like Berlanga, a move to title contention is something that feels natural, especially with how his record reads, but, while the hype is real, the actual action in the ring has proven to be a setback for a fighter who will need to truly step it up tactically if he wishes to continue with his undefeated record on Saturday.
Roamer Angulo, with a 27-2 record with 23 knockout wins could very well be taken as one of the toughest fights in Berlanga’s career thus far. While Angulo has two losses under his belt, both of them came in world title bouts, a scenario that Berlanga is still trying to break into. What does Angulo bring to the fight? A wealth of experience in big fights and a very good punching repertoire that can help him shake up Berlanga and take him all the way to a decision.
While Angulo could end up putting on a great fight against Berlanga, the fact of the matter is that this fight looks tailor-made for Berlanga to once again shine through and score another win. Still, with that said, until Berlanga doesn’t pick up the slack and polish his in-ring skills, especially his jab and footwork, seeing him in a title fight will not happen for any time soon.
