Most people were shocked to learn that Joseph Parker and Jack Massey would be fighting on the Eubank-Smith undercard. Massey, a native of the Peak District, started his professional career in 2013 and has always competed as a cruiserweight. In 21 fights, he has only twice weighed more above 200 pounds, and his best weight to date was only 205 pounds.
Just six weeks ago, he stated he simply couldn’t refuse this battle when offered. He has previously engaged in combat with many heavyweights, including Parker. It will be a significant step up for him because the opponent is 2 inches taller and more than 255 pounds heavier than he was in his last bout.
“One Smack” Massey won the IBO World Cruiserweight Championship in 2021, but he regrettably did not build on his success and just had one fight, against the powerful Czech Vaclav Pejsar, in 2022. Massey was knocked out in the first round by a powerful right hook, but he recovered quickly and came out swinging in the second round, winning within a few seconds.
Now looking at Masey’s opponent, former world champion New Zealander Parker has only suffered losses to world championship contenders Dillian Whyte, Anthony Joshua, and Joe Joyce at the highest level of competition.
He took a number of hard shots from Joyce before being stopped in the penultimate round with a strong short left hook. This terrible beating lasted for more than 30 minutes. However, he returned the favor by landing heavily and cleanly on Joyce, who is nicknamed as the “Juggernaut” for a reason since he can simply walk through anything.
Parker, who is trained by Andy Lee, has lost before and was stopped in his most recent fight, so Massey is aware that he has a chance to damage the Kiwi. However, Joyce demonstrated his strength and toughness in his most recent battle, still standing in the face of overwhelming artillery while many others would have fallen.
