Fight Preview
Unbeaten Liam Davies will face fellow junior featherweight Ionut Baluta on Saturday in Davies’ hometown of Telford, England.
The unranked Davies will take a significant step in his career if he can get past Baluta, who is the WBC’s No. 10 122-pounder. The skillful 26-year-old Englishman had an extensive amateur career, which has allowed him to progress quickly as a professional. He’s coming off a unanimous-decision victory over Marc Leach in June.
Telford’s own Davies (12-0, 5KOs) was a trim and fit 120.7 pounds while Baluta (15-3, 12KOs)—a Romanian spoiler based out of Madrid—was 121.4 pounds. The main event participants celebrated their scale success with a nose-to-nose staredown complete with plenty of chatter before both were separated by on-stage security.
The Davies-Baluta fight is for the vacant European title. Also on the card, 175-pound contender Anthony Yarde (22-2, 21 KOs) of London will face journeyman Stefani Koykov of Bulgaria. If Yarde wins, he is expected to challenge titleholder Artur Beterbiev.
Baluta, a Spain-based Romanian, opened eyes by outpointing former 122-pound titleholder TJ Doheny in a 126-pound bout in 2020. He lost a close decision to Michael Conlan at 122 in April of last year but bounced back to defeat Brad Foster by a unanimous decision this past May.
Davies is coming off a twelve-round, unanimous decision win over Lancashire’s Marc Leach on June 11 in this very venue. Saturday will mark the third overall appearance at this location for the 26-year-old local favorite, all within his past five starts.
Baluta has won seven of his last eight contests, as he fights in the UK for the fourth straight time. The 28-year-old spoiler is coming off a ten-round win over Brad Foster on May 20 at York Hall and has also posted upset wins over David Oliver Joyce and former 122-pound titlist TJ Doheny.
