Fight Preview
At Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Jaron Ennis will be defending the interim IBF welterweight title over one of his most challenging rivals, Roiman Villa. This fight should make an exciting addition to any fight fan’s calendar and could help to shape either Ennis further as one of its future superstars or potentially even both athletes’ careers by opening eyes wider.
Villa is an enormous upgrade over Ennis’ previous opponent Karen Chukhadzhian and will serve as an excellent test of Ennis’ ability to handle heavy handed opponents. Villa has demonstrated success against all his opponents so far – knocking out unbeaten A-side Janelson Bocachica via brutal knockout and then quickly dispatching more skilled Rashidi Ellis without much fuss.
Both Villa and Ennis are highly dangerous fighters, though Villa may possess more power. But Ennis’ unique blend of speed and power has proved disastrous for any opponent he’s encountered thus far – easily defeating former junior welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets, Thomas Dulorme and Custio Clayton with ease.
Both fighters possess distinct styles, yet both share some fundamental issues. Both tend to cross-walk their footwork when moving around the ring, which limits their ability to get into range for shots and allows their opponent to land powerful punches that could make for a long night of fighting.
Ennis may lack Villa’s power but his talent in the ring should give him an advantage in picking apart his opponent through various combinations and angles. Ennis must remain disciplined in his game plan and not allow Villa to distract him with flashy moves.
Both fighters must give stellar performances if they hope to emerge victorious in this fight, since the victor will have the opportunity to face either WBC and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr or WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford down the line. However, should either man lose, it could potentially put them on track towards falling to the bottom of the division with much harder odds of ever returning back up again.
