Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia Fight Preview

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will be defending his undisputed super middleweight title against unbeaten Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This bout between the two Mexican nationals will mark Alvarez’s first fight against a fellow citizen since he defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017. This article contains the best boxing analysis available.

Canelo Alvarez Analysis: Looking to defend title

Alvarez is still the biggest draw in boxing despite being only 33 years old and one of the most decorated fighters in the sport’s history. The Mexican fighter has won world titles in five different weight divisions and has made three successful defenses of the undisputed super middleweight championship. The sole defeat he has had in the last ten years came in May 2022 when he lost to Bivol in an effort to win the WBA light heavyweight title. Since then, he has won three straight decisions to retain his super middleweight title. During his final fight, Alvarez calmly defeated and controlled two-division champion Jermell Charlo, who was seen as a real challenger to Alvarez’s supremacy.

Jaime Munguia Analysis: He has a height advantage

Munguia, though, is said to possess the kind of profile that could cause Alvarez some problems. He is three inches taller than the 5-9 with a height advantage of 6 feet. Both 6-foot-6 Bivol and Alvarez utilized Bivol’s reach advantage and height to keep the lumbering Alvarez at a distance. Bivol also regularly led with combos and punches to slow down Alvarez’s attack. Munguia is renowned for his power shots in close quarters and his forward speed and precision. Munguia advanced to the middleweight class in 2020 after winning five super welterweight bouts. Munguia’s career reached a milestone in the division when he emerged as the WBO’s top contender and Demetrius Andrade’s mandatory opponent.
