This Saturday, June 15, inside the storied MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, David Benavidez will fight in the light heavyweight division against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, the former WBC and lineal light heavyweight champion. Find more articles like this for the most in-depth boxing analysis out there.

David Benavidez Analysis: He’s still undefeated in his career

With the exception of Caleb Plant, who was exceedingly fortunate to survive the beating he received at the hands of David Benavidez in that bout, Benavidez has been on a roll with seven stoppages in his last eight fights. Naturally, Benavidez will be facing unfamiliar ground in this battle. During their press appearance, Benavidez was noticeably smaller than Gvozdyk, as several spectators observed. However, Benavidez is a well-known, unbeaten boxer; he can certainly adapt to a new weight class. It doesn’t seem like fans will get to witness the all-Mexican war between Canelo Alvarez, the undefeated 168-pound champion, and David Benavidez anytime soon, in one of the most eagerly awaited matches in recent memory.

Oleksandr Gvozdyk Analysis: He’s coming off a long boxing break

Oleksandr Gvozdyk was rightfully hailed as the best light heavyweight on the planet five years ago after a 17-0 start to his career, with 14 of those victories coming inside the distance, including a brutal knockout of former champion Adonis Stevenson in Montreal. In fact, he entered as the slight favorite over Artur Beterbiev in their 2019 unification match. Five years is a long time in boxing, though, and Gvozdyk has essentially been out of the game since his stoppage loss to Beterbiev in that bout. He remained in retirement for over three and a half years until returning to the ring at the beginning of last year.
