Preview & Analysis: David Morrell vs Sena Agbeko 12-16-2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Unbeaten super middleweight champion David Morrell will face dangerous power-puncher Sena Agbeko in a World Boxing Association Championship Eliminator headliner at The Armory in Minneapolis on December 16th. Morrell has delighted crowds at this historic venue with vicious knockouts in every fight at The Armory; now heads into an event against Ghana native Agbeko, alongside lightweight contenders Chris Colbert and Jose Valenzuela in an official rematch.

The bout between Morrell versus Agbeko was originally slated to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on April 22nd. A few weeks prior to Agbeko’s scheduled fight with Morrell, an MRI revealed a saccular brain aneurysm, which prompted the Nevada State Athletic Commission to disqualify him from the fight. Brazil’s Yamaguchi Falcao, who had replaced Agebko late, was eliminated in the opening round of the Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia undercard bout on Showtime Pay-Per-View. After receiving the all-clear from two neurologists, Agbeko was granted his license by the NSAC.

Morrell recently scored an impressive first-round knockout over journeyman Yamaguchi Falcao and should be ranked higher than he is at present if he beats Agbeko decisively. Morrell should use this bout as an opportunity to increase exposure, potentially helping him secure a fight with Canelo Alvarez or David Benavidez should neither of those opportunities present themselves in future bouts.

Sena Agbeko is the lesser-known of the two combatants. At 31 years old, Agbeko is an experienced veteran who has mostly faced second-tier opposition since making his debut in 2011. Since 2011 Vladimir Shishkin represents his sole loss, though since that bout he’s seen victories against Winfred Harris Jr and Isaiah Steen to improve his record to 28-2 with 22 knockout wins.

Morrell, though having only competed in less rounds, is clearly more accomplished and looks to finish this fight convincingly. A product of Cuba’s amateur system, Morrell is likely favored to achieve victory.
