What do you get when you pit one of the best up-and-coming prospects in welterweight boxing against a fighter, who while good in his rights, seems to be living through the peril of not showing enough juice to finally make critics buy into his hype? As boxing hotshot prospect Vergil Ortiz Jr. gets ready to square up in the ring against Michael McKinson, a fighter in dire need of a win to turn his otherwise dying career upside down, could an easy win for Ortiz Jr. be in the books or will McKinson find it in himself to take down Ortiz and all the bad aura around him?

Vergil Ortiz Jr. is riding on one of the hottest winning streaks around in professional boxing, winning his last six fights via knockout, all while continuing to see his undefeated record of 18-0 making him one of the best welterweight boxing prospects around. Now, as he prepares to lace gloves and enter the ring to face Michael McKinson, it’s almost impossible to not see how this fight could go south for him.
The speed with which Ortiz boxes, plus his one-punch knockout ability almost makes it a given that in a fight against McKinson, a boxer who has seen better days in his career, the only real question to be asked is, will Ortiz be able to add one more KO to his present streak? The way Ortiz boxes, with an aggressive, yet very smart forward style of boxing, makes him one of the biggest threats in the welterweight division of pro boxing.
Why he hasn’t gotten more chances at bigger fights is something that is daunting, but given how dominant he has been in his fights before and by scoring a win tomorrow against McKinson, the man should be getting bigger nods and title opportunities soon.
Michael McKinson on the other side is a boxer that seems to be falling into a perennial loop of boxing angst. Again, it’s not like McKinson is not a good fighter, but given his particular style of fighting, which lacks any true power punching surprises, beating a fighter with such strong fundamentals as Ortiz Jr. is not something that we can see happening.
This is a fight for Ortiz Jr. to win, the only matter is how he will win it and how long it will take him. Being fair to McKinson, he’ll probably give Ortiz Jr. a couple of good rounds, but this fight shouldn’t go past the middle rounds. Don’t be surprised if the bout doesn’t last long and Ortiz Jr. scores yet another knockout tomorrow.
