One of the marquee Champions League openers takes place at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, when Paris Saint-Germain welcome German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund. The two European giants face off in the “group of death” this year, which also features Newcastle United and seven-time winners AC Milan.
A new manager will take over at Parc des Princes for the fourth time in as many years as Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, and Christophe Galtier all failed to win the Champions League during their time in charge.
After leading PSG to a 3-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League in 2022–23—the fifth time in seven seasons that the club had been eliminated at the first knockout hurdle—Galtier’s departure was inevitable, despite the club’s obligatory Ligue 1 title.
After losing 3-2 at home to Terem Moffi-inspired Nice last weekend, the defending Ligue 1 champions dropped to fifth place in the league table, which is unprecedented ground for the club that has won the title for the past three seasons in a row.
Dortmund, who like Les Parisiens are still suffering from last year’s failed attempt to end Bayern Munich’s run of dominance in the Bundesliga but settled for silver anyway, will try to breach the fortress that is the Parc des Princes this season.
Edin Terzic’s team is already in last place after disappointing draws against Bochum and Heidenheim before the international break. However, on the road at Freiburg last weekend, Dortmund overcame a 2-1 lead to win 4-2 and get within striking distance.
Even though Dortmund won the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup against PSG 2-1, Tuchel’s Parisians won the second leg 2-0 at the Parc des Princes and advanced to the championship game, where they were defeated by BVB’s regular foe Bayern.
