When Espanyol continues their La Liga season at home against Girona on Saturday night, they will be hoping to build on their victory against Barcelona last weekend. The home team is now ranked 16th in the standings with 13 points from their first 15 games, while Girona is in 12th place with 17 points thanks to a great start to the season.
Since returning to play after the 2022 World Cup, Espanyol has been in excellent form. They have won twice in the Copa del Rey, including a 3-1 victory over Celta Vigo on Tuesday to advance to the round of 16. The previous weekend’s La Liga match at Camp Nou saw Diego Martinez’s team tie 1-1 with Catalan rivals Barcelona, Joselu’s goal cleaning out Marcos Alonso’s opening goal.
Following their shocking relegation at the end of 2019–20, Espanyol, who made their comeback to this level last season, finished 14th in La Liga. They will now be trying to consolidate. In the most recent La Liga matchup between the two teams, which took place in April 2019, Periquitos defeated their Catalan rivals 2-1. During the 2020–21 Segunda Division season, Espanyol lost both games versus Girona.
Girona made it back to this level after winning the Segunda Division playoffs last year. This is the team’s first appearance in La Liga since finishing 18th in 2018–19. The club would consider any finish higher than 18th to be a successful season, and there have been several encouraging developments this year. With a total of 17 points from 15 games, they are now in 12th place.
The fact that Girona now only has La Liga to worry about, at least for the remainder of the season after Cacereno eliminated them from the Copa del Rey, should increase their chances of staying in the league. In fact, Michel’s team has gone undefeated in their previous five league games, a run that includes victories against Athletic Bilbao and Girona in their final two games before the 2022 World Cup break.
