When Atletico Madrid visits a Celta Vigo team that is on a roll on Sunday afternoon, they will be looking to get back to their winning ways in Spain’s premier division. The visitors will be coming off of a 1-1 draw with struggling Getafe at home, while Celta were victorious in a seven-goal thriller against Real Betis in Seville the previous time they played.
Celta has struggled this season, and going into the upcoming slate of games, they are only four points above the relegation zone, but the Sky Blues do seem to have turned a corner in terms of their play. Including victories over Elche, Athletic Bilbao, and Real Betis, Carlos Carvalhal’s team has only lost one of their previous seven La Liga games, with two of those triumphs coming in their most recent two games.
Gabri Veiga scored twice in a remarkable display as Celta defeated Real Betis last weekend. Jorgen Strand Larsen and Joseph Aidoo also scored. The outcome propelled Carvalhal’s team into the 12th spot in the standings, one point behind Girona in 11th. However, they now face two challenging games against Atletico and Real Sociedad before finishing the month at home against Real Valladolid.
Atletico, on the other hand, comes into this game off of a 1-1 draw with Getafe last weekend. Angel Correa gave the hosts the lead in the 60th minute, but Getafe equalized through Enes Unal in the 83rd. Since losing to Barcelona at home, Simeone’s team has gone unbeaten in their previous four league games, but they were also held by Almeria in the middle of last month, so their place in the top four is far from certain.
The Red and Whites are currently fourth in the standings, three points ahead of Rayo Vallecano in fifth, and 18 points back of Barcelona, who are currently leading the division. Since the squad does not play any European football and was eliminated by Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey, there is pressure on Simeone to oversee a solid finish to the league season. There is still much conjecture regarding Simeone’s future at the club.
