Game Preview

The Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets continue their five-game series with the 2nd match at Citi Field. The Mets have clung onto the divisional lead for the majority of the season, but they can’t sleep on their laurels as the Braves are right on their tracks, looking to make it an interesting last few months of the season. This is the 7th time these teams have faced off against each other this season, the Mets are leading 4-3.

Throughout the last few weeks, the Mets have been putting up some impressive performances across the board, having gone 8-2 over their last ten games. Adding in one of baseball’s best records at home, this team won’t be daunted at all against one of the most threatening offenses in the MLB. The Braves rank fourth in both runs scored per nine innings and OPS, while second in home runs.

This might be one of the most important series for the Atlanta Braves this season. The last few seasons have seen Atlanta dominate the division, so they know how important this weekend is towards not only staying as a leader in the Wild Card race but also closing the gap towards a divisional title. Over their last ten games, the Braves have gone 6-4.

Taijuan Walker will be the one trying to contain the scary Braves offense today, making his 19th start of the season. He is carrying a 9-2 record with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over 103.1 innings pitched. Walker has now allowed 3 runs in back-to-back starts but going deep into Friday night’s start is the key, especially given the Mets bullpen issues at hand.

The Atlanta Braves reply back with Ian Anderson, who is making his 21st start of the season. The 24-year-old holds a 9-6 record with a 4.99 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP over 101 innings pitched while striking out 90. Anderson has been looking good recently, throwing six shutout innings in his last outing, while in four of his last five starts he’s allowed two runs or fewer.
