The Oakland Athletics will be playing host to the Boston Red Sox for a three-game weekend series starting today at the Coliseum with both teams in very present need of a win, or two, or three, or basically as many they can get in order to start trying to turn their season around. For the A’s who are dead last in the AL West standings, a win today to start the series would be of great help in order to snap a three-game losing streak following a series sweep suffered against the Astros earlier in the week. The Red Sox on the other hand want to build on their win from last game against the Reds tonight with another victory to put in their season record, one that nobody would have ever expected to see the Red Sox carrying.

The Red Sox have been as volatile as ever this season. Just when you think they’re surely going to tank they manage to pick up steam and get going, but then they play a double-game short series against the Reds and end up splitting it. Such is baseball for all of you, but still, the Red Sox have been slowly showing some clear signs of improvement as the season has progressed, especially when looking at their hitting core. Players like J.D. Martinez, Rafael Devers and Trevor Story have all been putting up some very good numbers for the Sox as they continuously try to pick up the slack and try to become a contending team in the AL East once again.
That is why a win today against the A’s is of pivotal importance for the Sox. As the team continues to pick up more steam here and there, it’s becoming more and more apparent that when this team is in sync and wishes to play good baseball they can become a run scoring unit with a very strong pitching core to back them up. For today’s first game of the series out in the Coliseum, it will be RHP Nathan Eovaldi who will be looking to pick up the win, especially with how good he has been pitching in his last couple of outings where he has shown a serious rise in his starts.
For the Oakland A’s, if the offense played at the same level as how their pitching department performs we could be talking about a mid-table team in the AL West division, but man, as long as the A’s don’t start pressing the gas on offense, there’s only so much that their starters and bullpen can do to save face. As starter RHP James Kaprielian looks to take the mound today hoping to get a win to snap the team’s most recent three-game losing streak, it will be up to the offense to either show up and help out or see the team take yet another L.
