Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays: Picks & Analysis 9/07/2022

Game Preview

Today, the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays wrap up their three-game series at Tropicana Field. The Rays are still very much in the hunt for the American League East Division and an AL Wild Card berth. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have seemingly transitioned to the role of spoiler as the season winds down while they limp towards the finish line as injuries continue to mount.

On Monday, outfielder Franchy Cordero appeared to turn his ankle going for a fly ball in right field and had to leave the game. The Red Sox recalled Bobby Dalbec to replace him as the team’s endless stream of injuries continues. On Monday night, the Red Sox blew a 3-2 lead and fell 4-3 to the Rays to end a five-game winning streak.

Boston continues to fight an uphill battle as the season is coming to an end. Decisions will have to be made shortly about the availability of the likes of Nate Eovaldi, Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford. All three pitchers are on the injury list with various injuries as the Red Sox begin to look towards next year.

The Rays, who once were 15 1/2 games behind the Yankees, are now just 5 games behind them with a series in the Bronx looming this weekend. With injuries mounting and the team’s pitching appearing to finally falter, it looked like 2022 was not going to be their year. Fast forward 15 games and the Rays have gone 12-3 in that span and are now back into the American League playoff picture.

Jeffrey Springs will try to keep things rolling for the Rays, making his 20th start of the season today. He is holding a 7-4 record with a 2.62 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP over 106.2 innings pitched while striking out 117. Boston replies back with Nick Pivetta, who has been inconsistent throughout the season. The 29-year-old carries a 9-10 record with a 4.37 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP over 150.1 innings pitched while striking out 145.
