Cincinnati Reds vs New York Mets: Preview & Analysis 8/09/2022

Game Preview

Today the Cincinnati Reds will try to bounce back from a 5-1 loss against the New York Mets in the opener of a three-game series at Citi Field. Cincinnati is in a very difficult position as their 44-64 record basically cuts them out of playoffs contention.

On the other hand, the Mets hold a 7-game lead in the NL East at 71-39 and they might as well be already preparing for their playoffs appearance. These teams met in Cincinnati back in early July, with the Mets taking 2 out of 3 at Great American Ball Park.

Even though the Reds entered Monday night on a solid 6-2 stretch, facing the New York Mets is a whole different beast. Starling Marte launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the first that would hold up the rest of the game, and new acquisition Tyler Naquin added some insurance with a two-run triple in the eighth.

The Mets are #4when it comes to scoring offense in baseball at 4.80 runs per game on a .739 team OPS that is solidly in the top 10. But now if we take a look at Cincinnati’s numbers, they rank second-worst in baseball with a 4.99 collective ERA, making it a recipe for disaster for the Reds.

Trying to turn things around, the Reds are sending out Mike Minor to the mound. The 34-year-old is holding a 1-8 record with a 6.19 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP over 56.2 innings pitched while striking out 51 throughout 11 starts. On Wednesday, he allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks over 5.1 innings against the Miami Marlins.

The New York Mets reply back with Carlos Carrasco, who is making his 22nd start of the season. Carrasco has been looking solid this season, holding a 12-4 record with a 3.82 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP over 117.2 innings while striking out 114. He is coming off a recent win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.
