Cleveland Guardians vs Oakland Athletics: Odds & Preview 4/29/2022

April 29, 2022

It’s Friday and guess what? Sadly, the Cleveland Guardians are still riding on what could be considered the worst losing streak in all of the American League. How Cleveland is not yet reaching for the panic button is something that’s both tricky and amazing, but as they gear up for the first game of their three-game weekend series against the A’s in Oakland, the question here is, will Cleveland be able to find their way to victory in this series, or will they continue in their downwards spiral? As starter RHP Aaron Civale gets ready to try and revert Cleveland’s luck from the mound today, Oakland’s RHP Frankie Montas looks more than poised to not allow Cleveland to break their losing streak just yet.

Game Preview

Please, please, pretty please, someone tell the Guardians to start playing according to how they stand in the different stats lists both on batting as well as pitching. On paper Cleveland should be one of the better teams in the AL, but as of right now, and coming into this series carrying a seven-game losing streak, it feels like what the stats say differ completely from what happens on the field. Manager Terry Francona is probably as baffled as everyone else watching this Guardians team play, because of how easily wins continue to slip out of their hands.

Yes, they are coming off series against two very hot teams, the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels, but if there was ever a time to wake up and hit the ground running for Cleveland, it’s right now.

For Oakland the key to a season in which they saw the core of their roster be gutted has been their pitching core and starting rotation. In a sport where hitting wins games and pitching wins titles the A’s are taking that statement very seriously as they continue to get better and better, including today’s starter Frankie Montas who is establishing himself as a key part of Oakland’s rotation.

Now, of course, it’s always good to remember that offenses win games, which means that Oakland really needs to turn the heaters on their batting line up, especially if they wish to continue to push Cleveland down their apparently never-ending losing streak. With Montas on the mound and a strong assistance from the bullpen the A’s should be just fine from the pitching perspective of the game, but the offense needs to start playing the role of backup way better if they wish to continue being competitive through the season.
