Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Guardians: Picks & Analysis 8/17/2022

August 17, 2022

Game Preview

The Detroit Tigers will try to close out a four-game series in the best possible way after picking up 2 out of 3 against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. That’s despite a rough season that included the firing of general manager Al Avila last week.

Harold Castro got Detroit off to a fast start with an RBI single in the first before rookie Kerry Carpenter launched a two-run homer later in the inning, while Castro’s RBI double in the third proved to be an important add-on.

Rookie Garrett Hill turned in a strong performance with six innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out three to earn the win. Gregory Soto shut the door for his 22nd save. Castro had a three-hit game, while Carpenter was on base four times overall.

If Cleveland is unable to take the AL Central crown, its issues against the Tigers will be a big reason why. Jose Ramirez had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first and an RBI single in the eighth with Myles Straw also adding an RBI groundout, but the Guardians were undone by going 3-10 with runners in scoring position.

Today, Cal Quantrill is making his 23rd start of the season for the Cleveland Guardians. He is holding a 9-5 record with a 3.67 ERA anda 1.22 WHIP over 130 innings pitched while striking out 86. Last Friday, Quantrill looked great against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing 1 hit and not a single walk over 7 shutout innings, striking out 7.

The Detroit Tigers reply back with Daniel Norris, who is making his 29th appearance of the season. Norris carries a disappointing 0-4 record with a 5.97 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP over 34.2 innings pitched while striking out 44. He threw 4.2 scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox in his first outing with Detroit last Friday.
