Houston Astros vs Boston Red Sox: Preview & Odds 5/18/2022

Game Preview

Yesterday the Houston Astros completely rolled over their game against the Boston Red Sox, where Nathan Eovaldi struggled way too much against the Astros’ offense during the first couple of innings, where he allowed 9 earned runs to the Astros. It was tough to see the position that the Red Sox got themselves into, especially after demonstrating during the first game of the series that they are capable of taking down one of the strongest teams in the league.

Now the Red Sox will send out Nick Pivetta as their starting pitcher, and although he isn’t carrying the best numbers, he did put up a good performance against the Texas Rangers in his last appearance. He has a 5.08 ERA but specifically against the Rangers he pitched 7 innings, scored 4 strikeouts and only gave 1 run away, which might make him feel a bit confident coming into this game against the Astros.

If we look back at his last season, it’s really clear that 2021 was a much better year for him, but now he will try to turn things around and score his second win of the season, even if playing against the Astros’ offense is not an easy task for any pitcher out there.

On the other hand, Luis Garcia will be opening things up for the Houston Astros which already puts them in a favorable position right from the get-go. He’s won each of his last two starts, and has allowed only three runs over 18 innings, making him look like a great option for the Houston Astros this game, considering how weak the Red Sox’s offense is against left-handed pitchers, at least from what we’ve seen so far in this season.

It’s crystal clear that the Houston Astros are the favorites coming into this game, but we already saw the Red Sox take down the Astros in a fairly convincing manner, although it was mostly due to Garrett Whitlock’s strong start. Now, if they are able to survive the early innings without allowing many runs, the Boston Red Sox might have a chance at claiming victory in this three-game series.
