Houston Astros vs Chicago White Sox: Preview & Analysis 8/16/2022

Game Preview

After picking up an unexpected 4-2 win over the Houston Astros yesterday, the Chicago White Sox will try to keep their streak going in the 2nd encounter of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. These teams met at Minute Maid Park back in June, with the Astros taking 2 out of 3. Houston still owns the best record in the American League at 75-42, while the White Sox are 2 games out of first in the Central division at 60-56.

The Chicago White Sox team has been searching for a spark all season and after a surprising victory in yesterday’s game, they might have finally found it. After getting blanked most of the night, the White Sox finally got going with a game-tying two-run double in the eighth before Yoan Moncada then provided the two-run single that ultimately decided things. Chicago is now on a 4-game winning streak.

On the other side, the Houston Astros are in a very comfortable position even if they started the series with a disappointing defeat. Their bullpen is the absolute best in the major leagues carrying a 2.81 ERA. Houston is only a middle-of-the-pack scoring offense at 4.53 runs per game despite posting an excellent .742 OPS that is fifth-best in baseball. Today, the Astros will be sending their best pitcher in an effort to turn things around in the series.

To kick things off, Justin Verlander is making his 22nd start of the season. He is holding an impressive 15-3 record with a shiny 1.85 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP over 136 innings pitched while striking out 134. The 39-year-old star had a shaky performance by his standards last Wednesday, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts across 6 frames against the Texas Rangers.

Chicago replies back with one of their best. Dylan Cease is making his 24th start of the season, which means that the White Sox have a good shot at taking the 2nd game of the series. Cease is carrying a 12-5 record with a 1.96 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over 128.2 innings pitched while striking out 174. The righty continued his historic run last Thursday against the Royals, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
