Houston Astros vs Cleveland Guardians: Picks & Analysis 8/05/2022

Game Preview

Yesterday the Houston Astros bounced back from a series loss against the Boston Red Sox, picking up a 6-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians in the opener of a four-game series at Progressive Field. The Astros are now 4-6 in their last 10 games, including getting swept in their previous road trip by the Oakland Athletics. On the other hand, the Guardians handled their business in a series win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

It’s strange to see the Houston Astros in this position, especially because they were one of the hottest teams in the MLB not too long ago. Now things have been looking very uncomfortable for them. Fortunately for Houston, they are still sitting at the very top of the American League West standings, leading the Seattle Mariners by 12 games, and the Rangers by 22, which means that they aren’t losing their spot any time soon.

On the other side of the field, the Cleveland Guardians are averaging the 7th-most hits in the league with a .321 on-base percentage this season. The opportunities have clearly been there to get runners across home plate, but they always find ways to trip over their own feet in the process of doing so. Like yesterday, when they got demolished by Justin Verlander in a shutout loss.

Following yesterday’s loss, Guardians’ manager Terry Francona announced that Hunter Gaddis will be promoted and make his debut Friday night. He will be the 13th Guardians rookie to make his debut this season. The Houston Astros reply back with Framber Valdez, who is making his 21st start of the season. Valdez holds a 9-4 record with a 2.80 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over 128.2 innings pitched while striking out 117.
