Game Preview

The New York Mets will host the Houston Astros at Citi Field for a two-game series in an effort to keep the best record in the National League. What’s so impressive about the Mets record is that they have done it largely without Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer, two of their very best players. New York is 47-27 and is 5 games ahead of the Braves in the divisional standings. The Astros aren’t that far behind, sitting near the top of the American League. At 45-27, Houston has the 2nd-best record in the American League, behind the New York Yankees.

The Houston Astros will send out Framber Valdez as their starting pitcher, who is having a great season so far. Valdez is making his 15th start of the season and he ranks among the top 20 in the league with a 2.90 ERA this year. He is holding a good-looking 7-3 record with a 1.13 WHIP over 87 innings pitched. In his last appearance, Valdez allowed 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7 across 6 frames. If the Houston Astros want to pick up the first win of the series, Valdez needs to put up a performance like the ones we’re used to seeing from him.

On the other side, the New York Mets will be using Carlos Carrasco to start things up, making this his 15th start of the season. Last year was his first season with the Mets, and he had to deal with injuries, struggling with a 1-5 record and a 6.04 ERA. But this season is a whole different story as his stats are much better. He is on a 8-3 record with a 4.42 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP over 77 innings pitched. Carrasco picked up his last win on Friday 17th, when the Mets scored a win over the Miami Marlins. He gave up 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks over 6.1 innings while striking out 7 of the Marlin batters.
