The Angels will play the final game of their 2022 season visiting the Oakland A’s this Wednesday. Los Angeles just came off a seven-game winning streak before losing to Oakland in 10 innings on Monday and Tuesday, 5-4 and 2-1, respectively. The Angels will wrap up another very disappointing season this Wednesday.
Los Angeles has two of the best players in the league on their roster in Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, but still haven’t been able to build a decent team around them to win games consistently over the last few years. They got off to a slow start again this season, which led to the firing of their manager, Joe Maddon, during the first half of the season. The Angels have basically been out of playoff contention since then but have definitely played better baseball over the past two weeks.
The A’s will also be wrapping up a disappointing season of their own, but they were expected to do so, being one of the worst teams in baseball. Oakland has the lowest payroll in the league and lost their star slugger, Matt Olson, to Atlanta in the offseason. They’ve had a season according to their low expectations, being the worst record in the American League (59-102) and are 2.5 games clear of Washington for the worst record in the majors. They also have the worst offense in the MLB, hitting at only .216.
This will be Ohtani’s last chance to send a signal to MVP voters that he’s deserving of the award, although all indications are pointing to Judge as the likely winner. Ohtani has put together another amazing season at the plate and on the mound, including 8 shutout innings against Oakland last week. Also, this game will be Oakland’s chance to sweep the series against the Angels, since they already won Monday and Tuesday’s games.
