The biggest concern for Philadelphia is that they cannot afford to stay cold this week, as they are battling for one of the final National League playoff spots. The Phillies rattled off a six-game winning streak at the end of August, beating Cincinnati in four straight games and winning the first two games of a series against Pittsburgh. They proceeded to lose six of their next seven contests, with two losses against Arizona and a sweep at the hands of San Francisco.
When it comes to the Marlins, they were not expected to contend for a playoff spot this season, but they had a solid first half of the year. The Marlins were only five games under the .500 mark heading into the All-Star break, but they have slowed down dramatically since then. They are 17 games below .500 going into this series, including their current seven-game losing streak. Miami was swept by Tampa Bay last week before getting swept in Atlanta as well.
Trying to turn things around, Miami is sending Trevor Rogers to the mound today. The 24-year-old lefty carries a 4-10 record with a 5.57 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP over 93.2 innings pitched while striking out 88. Philadelphia replies back with Bailey Falter, who is making his 11th start and 15th appearance this season. He is holding a 3-3 record with a 4.08 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP over 57.1 innings pitched while striking out 52.
