Game Preview

The Miami Marlins will take a trip to Tropicana Field where they’ll open up their two-game interleague series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Miami Marlins arrive into this match after scoring a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, avoiding being swept in a three-game set, although they are still sitting at the lower part of the standings with a 18-22 record. On the other hand, the Tampa Bay Rays are in a much better form as they’ve won 3 out of their last 5 games, albeit it’s important to mention that they haven’t faced any of the stronger teams in the league.

To kick things off, Pablo Lopez will be the starting pitcher for the Miami Marlins. The 26-year-old Venezuelan right-handed pitcher boasts a 4-1 record, 1.57 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP over 46 innings pitched in his 8 starts, which are some impressive numbers. Lopez didn’t have his best game against the Washington Nationals last week, where he gave up three earned runs over three hits and three walks in just three innings. Hopefully for the Miami Marlins he comes in a much better form if they want to start this series with a victory over the Rays.

On the other side, Shane McClanahan will be the one opening up the game for the Tampa Bay Rays. McClanahan carries a 3-2 record, with a 2.33 ERA and an astonishing 0.86 WHIP over 46.1 innings in his 8 starts so far this season. He is tied with White Sox’ Michael Kopech for 3rd place in the WHIP rankings, which is quite surprising. It looks like the Tampa Bay Rays have the edge when it comes to the pitching in this game, and that might be just enough to get them the first win of this two-game interleague series.
