Game Preview

The defending American League champions Houston Astros play host to the Minnesota Twins for the second encounter of a three-game series. The Astros swept the Twins in three games in Minnesota back in May, outscoring them 21-3 in that series. Yesterday, Houston picked up a 4-2 win and they’ll try to keep the ball rolling. While the Astros are in control in the American League West, the Twins are fighting for their postseason lives.

The American League Central is there for the taking, but the up-and-down Twins are currently on the outside looking in. Minnesota is second in the division, three games behind the Cleveland Guardians and tied with the Chicago White Sox. In the Wild Card chase, the Twins are currently the second team out, three games out of one of the three available spots. After winning four straight games, the Twins dropped three consecutive games against the Texas Rangers.

Minnesota has a tough challenge ahead of them as Houston is three games up on the Yankees for the best record in the American League and 11.5 games up on the Seattle Mariners in the American League West. The Astros are 6-4 in their last 10 games, coming off a tough series where they salvaged the final contest in a three-game series against Atlanta. After getting off to a slower start than expected, the offense has picked up, now ranking eighth averaging 4.6 runs per game, and fourth with 166 home runs.

Today, Houston is sending Framber Valdez to the mound, who is making his 24th start of the season. The 28-year-old left is holding a 12-4 record with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over 149 innings pitched while striking out 134. The Twins reply back with Dylan Bundy, who has struggled on the road throughout the season. Overall, he is carrying a 7-5 record with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP over 103.2 innings pitched while striking out 77.
