Game Preview

Today the dominant New York Mets go up against the Cincinnati Reds in the second match of their three-game set at Great American Ball Park. Right now the Reds are looking like the absolute worst team, not only in the National League, but in the whole MLB. They are holding a 27-52 record, which looks ridiculous compared to the Mets’ 50-30. We all know that anything can happen in this sport, but it’s going to take a miracle for the Reds to pick up a win against one of the best teams in the major leagues.

There is something scary when it comes to facing the New York Mets. The Mets offense is #4 in runs per game, #6 in hits per game, and carry a combined batting average of .256. But it’s not only their offense that is looking great, their pitching staff is also one of the best in the league.

Today, Max Scherzer is making his return after a month of being on the injured list with a strained left oblique muscle. This is Scherzer’s first season with the New York Mets and he’s been performing up to the expectations. He holds a 5-1 record with a 2.54 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP over 49.2 innings pitched.

Cincinnati is sending out Nick Lodolo to the mound, making this his 4th start of the season. The 24-year-old lefty is on a 1-2 record with a 5.52 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP, and you can already tell the difference in the pitching matchup. Lodolo is making a return after a stretch on the 60-day injured list due to back issues.

Both pitchers are coming off a stint in the injured list, but there is definitely a huge gap between the two of them. There is one important thing to mention, even if Lodolo is not going to look that great, he is far from being the main reason why the Mets are the heavy favorites in this match. The New York Mets are superior in every aspect in this matchup, and as mentioned before, the Reds are going to need a miracle.
