New York Mets vs Houston Astros: Analysis & Predictions 6/21/2022

June 21, 2022

Game Preview

The New York Mets and the Houston Astros have been two of the best teams in the MLB to begin the 2022 season. Today we’ll have the first encounter of their two-game interleague series at Minute Maid Park. Right now the Mets have the 2nd-best record in the MLB at 45-24 and have the most wins of any team in the National League.

On the other hand, the Astros have the 2nd-best record in the American League and 4th-best record overall at 41-25. And something important to consider is that after this series, the Houston Astros go to New York for a four-game series against the Yankees and then 2 more encounters against the Mets.

Jose Urquidy will be opening things up for the Houston Astros, making his 13th start of the season. The 27-year-old is holding a 5-3 record with a 4.99 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP over 61.1 innings pitched. Even if we consider that he has a good record, this year hasn’t been the best for Urquidy so far, and today he has a tough challenge in front of him as the Mets offense is looking scary.
The most concerning thing about his performance is his 9.4% barrel rate, which almost puts him at the bottom of the league among qualified starters. Urquidy is only striking out 6.9 batters per nine innings.

The New York Mets will send out Trevor Williams as their starting pitcher, who is making his 6th start of the season and 13th appearance overall. Williams holds a 1-3 record with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP over 35.2 innings pitched.

The 30-year-old righty picked up his first win on June 1, when the Mets scored a 10-0 win over the Washington Nationals. He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks over 5 scoreless innings though he only struck out 1. This is going to be a very important game for Williams as he is facing a really strong offense from the Astros.
