New York Mets vs Miami Marlins: Preview & Picks 03/31/2023

March 31, 2023

Game Preview

The upcoming Friday evening game will see the New York Mets face off against the Miami Marlins with hopes of continuing their recent win against the same team. In their previous match, the Mets emerged victorious with a score of 5-3, aided by a stellar performance from Max Scherzer as the starting pitcher. The Miami team lost despite playing in front of over 31,000 fans during the first game of a seven-game homestand.
The Mets’ left-handed pitcher David Peterson will start Friday’s game, having won the final spot in the rotation over Tylor Megill. Peterson competed for the position when Jose Quintana suffered a rib cage stress fracture. During spring training, Peterson walked eight batters in 12 innings, but he did not concede a run during Grapefruit League play and held opposing hitters to a .028 batting average while striking out 13. Last year, Peterson split his time between the starting rotation and the bullpen, recording a 3.83 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 105.2 innings.

In Thursday’s game, the Miami team had a slow start and did not score any runs during the first five innings. However, they managed to tie the game with three runs in the sixth inning, with Luis Arraez and Garrett Cooper contributing to the score. Miami’s bullpen struggled to keep up with New York’s relievers in the seventh inning, and their offense failed to produce anything. Last year, the Marlins ranked No. 27 in batting average (.230) and relied heavily on their pitching, which was No. 14 in ERA (3.87).
On Friday, the Marlins will have southpaw Jesus Luzardo on the mound. Luzardo is considered a wildcard in the rotation, which includes reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara and veteran Johnny Cueto. In his first full season with Team Venezuela, Luzardo performed well in the World Baseball Classic, posting a 3.32 ERA and a 30% strikeout rate across 100.3 innings. Despite some command issues last year, he is expected to make progress this year. Luzardo had a 15-1 strikeout-to-walk rate in 13.2 innings of spring training.
