The St. Louis Cardinals would love nothing more than to be able to get rid of their most recent three-game losing streak which includes two losses already in their three-game series against the New York Mets with a win today to salvage the last game of said series before having to play host for Arizona in their upcoming four-game series to round out the week. The Mets on the other hand are sitting calm, cool and collected, still showing people left and right why the idea of portraying them as the top team in the National League thus far is not a farfetched idea whatsoever. So, who will come out of St. Louis as a victor today?
The St. Louis Cardinals have been doing rather good for the season thus far, even after being taken down for three games in a row. With a record of 9-7, which has them at 2nd place of the NL Central, there’s really not much to be said negatively about St. Louis.
If the case were that those losses they’re carrying came against underwhelming opponents then that would be one story, but considering that they have been against probably the hottest team in the NL aside from the Dodgers and Giants, the New York Mets, there’s not really much to worry about here.
In order to get back on track and not lose a beat from their chase against the NL Central leaders Milwaukee, St. Louis will be relying heavily on both starting LHP Steven Matz, who will be looking more than poised to score a win in his second ever start against his former team, the Mets, and also on a Cardinals offense that when lit, can make any and all opposing pitchers and defenses shake and tremble.
On the other side of the field are the New York Mets. It’s not really that difficult to see how the Mets continue week after week to dominate opponents left and right. Their offense plays like a gem and on defense this team shines just as bright, but if we had to pin point one specific quality that makes this Mets team a game-winning machine is their pitching staff.
If you were to look at the general scope of stats it wouldn’t take long to realize that the Mets rotation and bullpen can easily be considered the best pitching department in the league. This is the kind of pitching you want and need from a team with clear title aspirations.
With that said, RHP Carlos Carrasco will be taking on the starting duties today for a Mets team who will be looking to sweep the Cardinals and move on to their next opponent.
