After collecting a much needed and hard-fought victory in game two at home against the New York Rangers to try and start a series comeback, the Tampa Bay Lightning will be out and at it again tonight as they host the Rangers in a pivotal game four of the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals. After struggling to find the net against New York, Tampa was able to start striking back in game 3 and now, with the chance to even out the series or have it become the steepest of all hills, what version of both teams will fans watch on the ice tonight?
It’s time to accept two things, one about each team. On the one hand the Rangers must have some sort of magic spell when it comes to playing in this year’s playoff series because even if they keep on getting outplayed in every other game they play, they continue to find ways to either win said games or at least not lose by blowouts. On the other hand, even after losing two straight playoff games for the first time since 2019, the Tampa Bay Lightning are still playing some very good hockey and all signs point towards the team’s main stars all deciding to wake up and rise to the occasion at the right time.
The team’s most important players like Andrei Vasilevskiy, Ondrej Palat, Nikita Kucherov, Victor Hedman and Steven Stamkos took to game three and decided to show the Rangers why they are the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champions. They outskated the Rangers, even with the Rangers having shown a bigger skill set when it comes to power plays for example. Now, as game four approaches and with everything apparently working just right for coach Jon Cooper’s team, it seems like a victory today is the only way to go and the most probable scenario, that is if they can manage to keep the Rangers and their overachieving offense on lock.
For New York, the fact that they were able to take the first two games from the Lightning says a lot about their style of play and how much they want to make it to the Stanley Cup finals. Even when outplayed, this team continues to grind and make all scenarios work in their favor in one way or another, even when losing. Injuries through all lines of the ice could end up being a problem for the Rangers in game four, especially with how physical Tampa Bay has been playing, but still, if New York can find their postseason magic once again and score a win today, it could end up being the most important win of all the series.
