After finally dispatching a pesky Cleveland Guardians team in five games, the New York Yankees will move on to battle the Houston Astros for the right to go to the World Series. New York clawed their way to victory yesterday afternoon and will not have any downtime as they meet up in Houston this Wednesday. The Astros have had plenty of rest after sweeping the Mariners in their ALDS matchup in three-straight games. The pitching matchup in game one will feature righty Jameson Taillon (14-5, 3.91) of the Yankees taking on AL Cy Young favorite Justin Verlander (18-4, 1.75) of the Astros.
The Yankees had a modest celebration after beating the Guardians in the fifth and deciding game on Monday afternoon. They were soon on a flight to Houston to prepare to take on the Astros in the ALCS best-of-seven series. First things first, however, was the performance of the Yankees pitching on Monday afternoon. Starter Nestor Cortes, pitching on three days of rest, gave the Yankees five innings and allowed just three hits and one run in a huge performance.
The Houston Astros are looking to head to the World Series for the fourth time since 2017. That infamous 2017 championship still hangs over the franchise and anything short of another world series title will not make it go away. Veterans like Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel are certainly past the controversy of that title but would certainly like nothing more than to add to their trophy case and put the critics to rest.
The Astros have beaten the Yankees in 5 out of 7 this season and Houston’s 5-2 mark against New York is made even more impressive in that they did so while the Yankees were at their healthiest and most dangerous this season. Verlander has been superb all season and Yankees starter Jameson Taillon hasn’t been that good, so it’s going to be a difficult game for New York in Houston.
