Philadelphia Phillies vs Toronto Blue Jays: Predictions & Picks 7/13/2022

Game Preview

The Toronto Blue Jays are playing host to the Philadelphia Phillies for the 2nd and last encounter at Rogers Centre. Today, in an unexpected manner, the Blue Jays have announced that Charlie Montoyo has been “relieved of his duties as manager” (basically fired) in favor of bench coach John Schneider, who’ll assume the position on an interim basis through the end of the 2022 season.

It’s rare to see a team that’s 4 games over .500 and in possession of a Wild Card spot do a move like this, but if we look at the teams’ recent performance, it sort of makes sense. Montoyo’s Jays are in the midst of a dreadful stretch that has seen them drop 9 of their past 11 games, though they picked up the win in yesterday’s game.

On the other hand, the Philadelphia Phillies have only lost 1 series out of their last 5, splitting a four-game series with the Cardinals over the weekend. The Phillies are 3rd place in the National League East, trailing the Mets by 8 games. They are tied with St. Louis for the final NL Wild Card spot.

Today the Blue Jays will send Ross Stripling to the mound. He is making his 13th start and 21st appearance of the season. Stripling holds a 4-3 record with a 3.34 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP over 67.1 innings pitched. On the offense side, the Blue Jays have still been one of the best teams in the MLB this season, ranking 3rd in batting average.

The Philadelphia Phillies answer back with Zack Wheeler, who is making his 17th start this year. The 32-year-old righty carries a 8-4 record with a 2.46 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP over 95 innings pitched. Wheeler has now pitched 14 scoreless innings in a row, which should make him feel confident for this game.
