The Arizona Diamondbacks have a bright young shortstop on the verge of making his debut, but they are also bidding goodbye to a veteran middle infielder who has been with the team for ten years. When the Diamondbacks open a four-game road series against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night, it is assumed that Jordan Lawler, the sixth overall pick in the 2021 draft, will make his major league debut.

The Diamondbacks chose Nick Ahmed to make room for Lawlar on the major league roster. The 10-year MLB vet has spent his entire professional career with the Diamondbacks, where he has won Gold Gloves in 2018 and 2019. But after hitting .209 in August, he had his batting average drop to .212 after going 0-for-10 during the first four games of September. Since June 10th, he had not hit a home run.
The 12-5 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday afternoon kept the Diamondbacks in the race for a National League wild card place. They trail the last-place Miami Marlins by 0.5 games in the National League.
Chicago has a lot riding on this series as well; with a victory on Thursday, they can pull within a game of the division-leading Brewers. Milwaukee is off today after losing three of its last four games.
Rookie lefty Jordan Wicks has started his major league career on a winning note with three consecutive victories. In the series opener against Arizona, the Cubs will give the ball to another young starter. It will be Javier Assad’s 26th appearance and eighth start of the year.
Assad was 2-0 with a 2.48 ERA in five August starts, including a scoreless eight-inning performance last Saturday at Cincinnati. In Chicago’s 2-1 loss, he allowed seven hits, struck out seven batters, and walked one. Assad appeared to be on track for a win, but the Reds scored two in the bottom of the ninth to steal victory.
Right-handed pitcher Ryne Nelson will start Thursday’s game after being brought up from Triple-A Reno by Arizona manager Torey Lovullo after Wednesday’s contest. On August 11, Nelson gave up six runs on seven hits in three innings as the Diamondbacks lost 10-5 to the visiting San Diego Padres. He was sent down to the minors two days after being called up.
