When the Diamondbacks open a four-game road series against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night, it is assumed that Jordan Lawler, the sixth overall pick in the 2021 draft, will make his major league debut.

In Chicago’s 2-1 loss, he allowed seven hits, struck out seven batters, and walked one. Assad appeared to be on track for a win, but the Reds scored two in the bottom of the ninth to steal victory.
Right-handed pitcher Ryne Nelson will start Thursday’s game after being brought up from Triple-A Reno by Arizona manager Torey Lovullo after Wednesday’s contest. On August 11, Nelson gave up six runs on seven hits in three innings as the Diamondbacks lost 10-5 to the visiting San Diego Padres. He was sent down to the minors two days after being called up.
