On Thursday, the Los Angeles Angels and the Cleveland Guardians begin a four-game series in Anaheim, California, and both teams will need miracles to win.
After dropping two of three to the Twins at home, the Guardians find themselves six games behind in the American League Central. Wednesday’s 2-1 victory for Cleveland came thanks to five scoreless innings from starter Gavin Williams and four scoreless frames from three relievers. Emmanuel Clase recorded his 38th save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Guardians lost both games on Monday (20-8) and Tuesday (8-3), with Lucas Giolito taking the loss as the starting pitcher and Matt Moore blowing a save opportunity in his second appearance out of the bullpen. Among the former Angels, Reynaldo Lopez, known for his strong fastball, has performed the best. In three appearances, he has held opponents scoreless.
The sinking Angels need a miracle to avoid a losing season for the eighth year in a row. After losing three straight to the Baltimore Orioles to begin the week, culminating in a 10-3 defeat on Wednesday, they are now 64-76. The current losing streak for Los Angeles is at six games.
With the impending free agency perhaps finishing out his last season in an Angels uniform, it would be a huge boost if superstar Shohei Ohtani returned to the lineup. Ohtani has 44 home runs, far more than the second-placed Chicago White Sox’s Luis Robert Jr.’s 35. Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves has 46, the most in the majors.
In the first game of the series, the Guardians will start Cal Quantrill on the mound. The veteran right-hander returned to play on Friday after missing nearly two months due to soreness in his shoulder. He went six innings, allowing two runs on two hits to the Tampa Bay Rays, but he got no decision.
Phil Nevin stated that the Angels’ Thursday game will be “some sort of a bullpen game” due to uncertainty around the availability of right-handed starter Chase Silseth. On August 26 against the New York Mets, Silseth was injured when a throw from a teammate struck him in the back of the head.
