On Tuesday night, Petco Park will host a pivotal baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles are risking their first place standing in the AL East and MLB-best record on the road. San Diego is in serious need of a historic run as they are now fourth in the NL West after a dismal season.
In their previous meeting this year, the Padres swept the Orioles in four games. However, with the rosters and seasons of both teams suddenly looking different, the Orioles should be more competitive in this midweek matchup.
The Orioles have quietly put together one of the best regular seasons in baseball, and they need to keep winning to maintain their lead in the American League. In addition to having one of the finest road records in baseball (37-22), Baltimore has gone 7-3 over their last ten games.
A cross-country road trip is unlike anything this bunch has ever done before, but it’s safe to highly doubt it will scare them off. The Orioles appear to have the right combination of young firepower and talent and veteran savvy to pull off another road victory in this one and keep the baseball world on high alert.
Padres fans don’t have much to cheer about this year, while Orioles fans can argue that their team is one of baseball’s most exciting and unexpected in a positive way. After investing heavily in the roster at last year’s trade deadline and again this offseason, this club has only one goal: making a deep playoff run. They’ll probably be staying in for the month of October and binge-watching their favorite shows.
With a 3-7 record over their previous ten games, they continue to leave a lot to be desired and are currently in fourth place in the NL West, 15.5 games behind the Dodgers. At home, they are only slightly above.500, therefore it looks like the 2023 season will conclude in disappointment unless something dramatic happens.
