Game Preview
The Giants have not been eliminated from postseason contention. They have a slim half-game lead for third place in the NL Wild Card race. Every game now counts since we’re only one day away from September. If the Giants were to lose this game, they would be tied for the third wild card slot.
Although they are just 5-5 in their past 10, San Francisco just finished a series triumph against the Cincinnati Reds. The Giants’ final four series are all against teams with winning records, so every game is crucial at this point in the season.
The Padres‘ season has been a huge letdown. They entered the season with high expectations, and were widely favored to win the World Series. But that hasn’t worked out, as San Diego is now 10 games below .500 with seven straight losses. There is still a slim chance (30 games left) that they can make a huge run and still make the playoffs.
San Diego’s terrible record in one-run games (6-22) is a major problem. In addition, San Diego remains winless in extra frames this year, going 0-11. They should be 73-61, but due to bad luck and inability to close off games, they are just 61-73. Despite this, the Padres are still in last place and likely won’t be playing baseball until October 1.
Although he has made eight total appearances, Avila has only started twice. But he’s been working out of the bullpen, so his arm is in shape to pitch for longer stretches now. This is his ninth August performance, and all but one have been successful.
Despite allowing five runs in four innings one game, Avila is enjoying a stellar month of August. Nevertheless, he maintains a K/9 of greater than 9.0, an ERA of 3.22, and a lower oBA. If Avila can establish himself as a reliable starter and limit the Giants to three or four runs, the Padres will have a shot at winning.
