On Friday afternoon, Arizona Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen pitched a dominating game. On Wednesday night, the Diamondbacks will need another strong performance from Gallen if they want to keep pace with New York in the fight for the National League’s third wild card when they take on the Mets in the third of a four-game series in New York.
Pete Alonso, Ronny Mauricio, and Francisco Alvarez all homered for the Mets in their 7-4 victory against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, the team’s third loss in nine games. After Cincinnati beat the Detroit Tigers 6-5 in extra innings, Arizona’s advantage over the Reds in the National League’s wild-card race shrank to one game.
On Tuesday, the Mets jumped out to a 6-1 lead after only 4 1/3 innings against Arizona starter Ryne Nelson. The Diamondbacks had only six hits, but they took advantage of seven walks and two hit batters in the sixth and eighth innings, but they failed to capitalize.
Gallen, coming off one of his best performances ever, will try to save the bullpen from having to work 8 2/3 innings over the course of the previous two games. The Cubs managed only three hits off the 28-year-old, who went the whole in Friday’s 1-0 victory. He had nine punch outs and one walk.
When former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns was reported to have agreed to become the Mets’ president of baseball operations on Tuesday, the team’s immediate and distant futures became more exciting and uncertain than ever.
For more than seven years, Stearns served as the Brewers’ general manager and president of baseball operations. During his tenure, the team made the playoffs from 2018 through 2021 and advanced to Game 7 of the NL Championship Series in 2018.
Joey Lucchesi is scheduled to be called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. He last pitched for the Mets on August 18, when he went 5 2/3 innings without allowing a run in a 7-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. In nine career games (eight starts) versus the Diamondbacks, he is 2-5 with a 4.75 ERA.
