Pittsburgh Pirates vs Chicago Cubs: Analysis & Preview 4/22/2022

April 22, 2022

The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates will be locking up for the second of their four-game series going on yesterday into the weekend at Wrigley Field. For Chicago, the main objective here is to be able to bounce back from their series opening loss yesterday and set the tone for a promising weekend full of baseball and hopefully a couple of wins, if not three, for the local team. For Pittsburgh, their win last night against their division rivals, has put them in a position where if they can score a win today as well as maybe one or two more over the weekend, they could end up securing the 3rd spot in their division moving forward.

Game Preview

Both the Cubs and Pirates are tied right now with six wins and seven losses in their season record, which is why it’s of the utmost importance for both squads to come out today and score a much-needed win to separate themselves and take claim, at least momentarily, of the 3rd place spot in the NL Central division.

For Chicago LHP pitcher Drew Smyly, who is slated to start for the Cubs, it’s time to truly show if what fans and experts have seen from him thus far is for real or if it’s just hype. In his first two starts in the season, Smyly has pitched nine very solid innings, without any runs scored on him, including a start against Pittsburgh where he tossed a respectable five shutout innings, with only three hits against him.

If Smyly can back up what he has done so far in the season and pitch another solid game like he already showed he can do against the Pirates, and Chicago’s offense stands up for the challenge, the Cubs could be looking at reaching .500 in their win average tonight.

The Pirates will be coming into this game with a mindset set around the fact that if they already took down the Cubs at Wrigley yesterday, why not do it again today? Pittsburgh played some good and effective baseball last game, which at the end of the day is what matters when wanting to score as many wins on the road as possible, especially against divisional rivals.

For the Pirates, LHP José Quintana will be taking the mound hoping to not only get his first win of the season, but also to start showing critics that what happened last season, which was by far his worst as a professional, is something that should only be left in the past. He already pitched against the Cubs this season, showing some good signs and promise, which could end up allowing him to lead his team to victory from the mound tonight.
