The Astros and Red Sox just split a four-game series, but yesterday night’s loss might really hurt. The Astros suffered one of their worst defeats ever thanks to the Red Sox. After a lead-off home run in the first, the Red Sox added four more runs in the second and six more in the third.
The final score was 17 runs for the Red Sox and only one run for the Astros. The loss decreased the Astros’ record to 72-57, dropping them one spot to the third Wild Card spot in the AL behind Seattle in the standings. They are also trailing division leader Texas by one game.
The Astros’ pitching staff has been suffering as of late, and last night was just the latest evidence. They allowed 17 runs Friday night, bringing their total for the four games against the Red Sox to 31. They’ve given up 65 runs over the course of the last ten games.
The Astros will send Framber Valdez to the mound today. He has a 9-9 record and a 3.55 ERA this season. However, his last three outings have not gone well. He started the month off with a no-hitter, but in his following three starts he has allowed four or more runs. He has a 6.86 ERA in those outings.
The Tigers, however, were swept by the Cubs this week. Their season is not over despite their 58-69 record after this loss. Despite being 7.5 games off of first in the AL Central, they still have a slim chance of making the postseason. The Twins are no longer on their schedule, but games against the White Sox, Athletics, and Royals give them a chance to catch up.
Today, Matt Manning will take the mound for the Tigers. With a 4.31 earned run average, he is 5-4 on the year. His last two opening games were quite good. He has gone 11.1 innings while allowing only one earned run (by homer) over his last two starts. Although he hopes to have a stronger defense supporting him.
