Game Preview
The Chicago Cubs have been in a tight pennant chase and have had to make some difficult roster decisions. However, picking Pete Crow-Armstrong’s contract wasn’t difficult.
The 21-year-old outfielder Crow-Armstrong is making his debut with the Chicago Cubs and is anticipated to contribute in the final games of the season. He didn’t receive the nod in Monday’s 5-4 comeback win against the Colorado Rockies, but he should get another shot in the series’ second game Tuesday night.
In a battle of right-handers, the Cubs will send Javier Assad (3-3, 2.83 ERA) to the mound, while the Rockies will counter with Chris Flexen (1-7, 7.36 ERA).
Crow-Armstrong excelled in the minors this year. While playing for Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa this season, he had 107 games with a.283 batting average, 20 home runs, 82 RBIs, 37 stolen bases, and an.876 OPS (batting average plus slugging percentage).
The Cubs are counting on Assad to step up in his first career start at Coors Field, where pitching is always a focal point. On Thursday he started against the Arizona Diamondbacks and gave up three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, ultimately leading to a 6-2 loss.
On September 18, 2022, at Wrigley Field, he faced the Rockies for the first time in his professional career. After only two innings of work, he was charged with the loss after he gave up four runs (two singles and four walks).
Colorado, which is about to record its first 100-loss season, is trying to salvage some positives from the season despite its current losing streak of five games. After missing nearly two months with a broken left index finger, Kris Bryant returned to the lineup on Monday, going 1-for-4, and the young lineup continues to struggle.
On Monday, the Rockies were up 4-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but they ultimately lost the game. After Nolan Jones recorded his 15th outfield assist of the year by throwing out Seiya Suzuki at the bat, Jones let a two-run rally in the ninth inning slip through his fingers by dropping a leadoff double by Dansby Swanson.
