San Diego Padres vs New York Mets: Picks & Preview 7/22/2022

Game Preview

The San Diego Padres and the New York Mets kick off a three-game series at Citi Field to start the 2022 season’s second half. The Padres finished the first half of the season at 52-42, and on the other hand, the Mets did it on a 58-35 record. If the season ended today, both teams would get a spot in the playoffs. This series should be an excellent preview of how both teams arrive into the second half in the National League.

Unfortunately for the San Diego Padres, they were missing their best player for the entire first half of the season. Fernando Tatis Jr underwent surgery due to a fractured wrist suffered during the offseason and he was expected to return within three months. But there is reason to be optimistic because Tatis has begun to swing a bat regularly as he continues his rehab process.

Today, Yu Darvish is making his 18th start of the season for the San Diego Padres. He is holding a 8-4 record with a 3.41 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP over 108.1 innings pitched while striking out 100. Darvish has been looking great recently, and best of all, he is coming off a full week rest. In July, Darvish has struck out 25 batters throughout three games, including a season-high 10 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 2nd.

The New York Mets will send out veteran Max Scherzer, who is making his 12th start of the season. The 37-year-old holds a shiny 6-1 record with a 2.22 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP over 69 innings pitched while striking out 90. Even though he had a short stint in the injured list, Scherzer has been performing exactly as we would’ve expected him to.
