Today the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals finish up a three-game series with their last encounter at Great American Ball Park. The two teams will wrap up the month of August with the Cardinals looking towards a playoff push as they are holding a 75-55 record and the Reds already looking towards next season with a 51-77 overall record.
This season has been great for the St. Louis Cardinals as they are heading into the month of September in much better shape than they were in 2021. Last season, the Cardinals needed a 15-game win streak to end the season to sneak into a Wild Card spot in the National League, still behind first-place Milwaukee. This season, the Cardinals are more than 20 games over .500 and have built a fairly comfortable lead in the NL Central over last year’s champs, the Brewers.
Despite all of their changes in their lineup, the Reds have stayed competitive, but have struggled to get wins going just 8-16 since the trade deadline. On Monday night, even though they scored three home runs from three different players, the Reds were pummeled by the first-place Cardinals. On Tuesday night, the Reds pounded out 11 hits and knotted the series at a game apiece with a 5-1 win over the Cardinals. The Reds have gone just 4-6 in their last 10, but only scored an average of five runs per game.
The Cardinals will send one of their recently acquired starters, Jose Quintana, to the mound. With the Cardinals, Quintana has gone 1-1 with a 3.28 ERA and has allowed 26 hits in 24.2 innings. The Reds reply back with lefty Mike Minor. He will be making his 16th start of the season and is coming off his best performance in recent memory. On Friday, Minor went seven innings and allowed six hits and two runs while striking out seven against the Nationals.
