The New York Yankees continue to struggle after picking up a 4-0 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays in yesterday’s game at the Bronx. While the Bombers made winning look easy through the first half of the season, as they went into the break with a 64-28 record, they couldn’t keep it up after the All-Star break. In the second half, New York is just 8-14 and has dropped their last four series overall.
Fortunately for the Yankees, they still have a comfortable 10-game lead over the Blue Jays and 11 games ahead of the Rays in the American League East. Aaron Judge has carried the Yankees at times and he is the favorite to win the AL MVP. Judge ranks first in MLB with a 7.0 WAR, 46 home runs, and 100 RBI. We still have to see what kind of face they’ll show today against their opponents.
On the other hand, the Tampa Bay Rays are looking to storm the competition. They are clinging onto the final Wild Card spot in the AL East, 1 game ahead of the Orioles and 2 games above the Twins and White Sox. As usual, Tampa Bay does not have a roster full of stars, but they find ways to win, despite ranking in the bottom third of MLB in runs scored, batting average, and home runs.
While their offense is not that great, the Rays can count on their pitching staff to deliver a great performance. Today, Jeffrey Springs is making his 16th start of the season in an effort to keep things going. He is holding a 4-3 record with a 2.56 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP over 84.1 innings pitched while striking out 91. Springs is 3-1 on the road, and he only allowed two earned runs in six innings against the Bombers at home back on May.
Nestor Cortes will try to turn things around for the New York Yankees, making this his 22nd start of the season. Cortes holds a 9-3 record with a 2.67 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP over 118 innings pitched while striking out 125. Against the Rays, Cortes is 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA this season. This is definitely going to be an interesting pitching matchup, so make sure to watch this game!
