Game Preview

The Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners open their final three-game series of the season today, at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Texas is looking for its third straight victory over the Mariners, who have won 17 of their previous 21 encounters with the Rangers. Though that will be a difficult task considering that the Mariners are firm home favorites for today’s clash.

The Rangers extended their losing streak to three games last Sunday, suffering a heavy 10-4 defeat to the Cleveland Guardians. They got swept at home, and the Rangers have won just two of their last eight games overall while surrendering 40 runs in the process. Texas is 7-16 with a pedestrian 5.00 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and .267 opposing batting average in September.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Mariners dropped the third straight series following Sunday’s 13-12 defeat at the Kansas City Royals. It was Seattle’s eighth loss in 14 games, as Luis Castillo had his second straight meltdown, surrendering five earned runs on seven hits and three walks across 5.1 innings of work. The Mariners yielded a whopping 11 runs in a shocking bottom of the sixth inning, blowing a huge 11-2 lead.

Seattle will be sending one of their best to the mound in Robbie Ray. This season, Robbie Ray has had ups and downs and sits at 12-10 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 201 strikeouts for the season. The southpaw is 1-2 with a 3.68 ERA and 4.39 FIP in September, sandwiching a couple of duds with a pair of stellar outings. Last Wednesday, Ray tossed six scoreless frames and yielded just three hits in a no-decision against the Oakland Athletics.

Texas replies back with Jesus Tinoco, who is making his season’s first start today. Throughout 13 appearances, Tinoco is currently holding a 0-0 1.72 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP over 15.2 innings pitched while striking out 13. Across 8 appearances, the 27-year-old Venezuelan righty hasn’t given up a single run, which should give him some confidence heading into today’s game.
