The Orioles were eliminated from the playoffs on Friday after the Mariners and Rays both won their games. A day earlier, the Orioles’ loss to the Red Sox put the Blue Jays in the playoffs. The Orioles were left out but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they were a big surprise this year and figure to be a threat for years to come.
The Blue Jays won three of four in the series to turn a 2.5-game lead into a 4.5-game lead. The Orioles never recovered. But the Orioles won’t go quietly, winning two of three this weekend in New York against the Yankees, who were AL East winners and avoided ceding the AL record to Aaron Judge.
The Mariners are 1.5 games ahead of the Rays for second place, third place will go to Cleveland and Tampa Bay holds the tiebreaker with Seattle. The Rays finish the season with three games in Boston. The Blue Jays have not played a playoff game in Toronto since 2016.
