Toronto Blue Jays vs Boston Red Sox: Preview & Predictions 4/20/2022

April 20, 2022

After securing a hard fought, 2-1 win last night with only three hits to their count, Boston wants to start showing a stronger side of their game, but with a Blue Jays team that showed signs of fight beyond belief, everything is up in the air, meaning that Red Sox and Jays fans will surely be in for a great ball game tonight at Fenway. While Boston is sending RHP Nick Pivetta, who has been seen struggling in the beginning of the season with a 0-2 record and a whopping 9,39 ERA, the Blue Jays will trust their pitching to RHP Jose Berrios, who is also riding on a high ERA of 11.81 in his two season starts, both won by Toronto but also not finished by Berrios.

Game Preview

The majority of the offensive prowesses in last night’s game came early in the 2nd and 3rd inning, as Blue Jays catcher Zack Collins hit a solo homer against Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi, giving Toronto an early lead, only for it to last for one inning after Boston’s Kike Hernandez and Trevor Story doubled back to back to tie the score. A sacrifice fly in the 7th hit by Red Sox catcher Connor Wong was enough to drive the winning run of a game that was everything but an offensive juggernaut. Defensively Toronto suffered a couple of setbacks due to errors from SS Bo Bichette, making them the first two errors of his season.

In general, both the Red Sox and Blue Jays can brag about having some of the strongest hitting powers in the American League. Yet that was not shown yesterday in Boston’s tight as ever two to one win. For baseball fans who love the thrills of high-octane matchups with a plethora of offense driven action, seeing Boston be held back to only three hits and still manage to score a win is something that baffled everyone, but hey, that’s baseball at the end of the day. So, what does all this amount to? Clear signs from both teams that improvements, especially on offense need to be made.

For example, when you have a player as polarizing on offense as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. like Toronto has, that in itself should be enough to start a run-scoring fiesta game in and game out. And if you’re Boston, Hernandez, Story, Bogaerts, Devers and Martinez are all solid hitters that can automatically make any offense flourish. What all this means at the end of it all, is that once the bats on both teams get going, hopefully tonight, some very exciting baseball will be coming our way.
