Toronto Blue Jays vs Los Angeles Angels: Preview & Analysis 04/07/2023

April 7, 2023

Game Preview

The Los Angeles Angels will play the Toronto Blue Jays in the first game of a three-game set on Friday. Last season, Toronto went 4-3 against Los Angeles, with the road club winning all seven games.

Toronto enters the season with 90.5 expected wins, third most in the American League after the Yankees and Astros. The Blue Jays lost three of their first four games, but then swept the Royals in Kansas City. Toronto will now remain on the road and will not return home until April 11 against Detroit.

Today, Chris Bassitt will get the start. In 3.1 innings of a 9-4 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday, the 34-year-old right-hander allowed nine runs and four home runs. During the regular season in 2022, Bassitt went 15-9 with a 3.42 ERA.

Bassitt has faced the Angels 12 times in his career, though not since 2021. He is 6-3 with a 3.43 ERA in his career versus the Angels, but 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA in six starts since the beginning of 2020.

The Los Angeles Angels boast two of the best players in MLB, yet they were projected to win only 81.5 games this season. The Angels last won a game in 2015, and they finished 73-89 in 2022. The Angels will make their home debut after defeating Seattle 4-3 on the road on Wednesday. Although the Angels are off to a good start, they started the season 27-17 last year before going 46-72 the rest of the year.

Patrick Sandoval will start for the Angels after throwing five innings and allowing one run in a 13-1 win over Oakland on Saturday. Last season, Sandoval finished 6-9 with a 2.91 ERA. Sandoval has only played Toronto once, on May 29 of last year, when he allowed six runs in three innings in an 11-10 loss.
