The Washington Nationals continue their four-game series against the San Diego Padres after picking up an unexpected 3-1 victory in the opener yesterday. Before heading into this series, the Nationals lost 2 out of 3 against the Chicago Cubs earlier this week, while the Padres suffered the same fate against the Miami Marlins.
The Padres have now lost 8 of their last 13 games, they are still in the playoff picture though, leading Milwaukee by two games for the final NL Wild Card spot. San Diego was hoping to make a push for a World Series title this season when it acquired Soto from Washington several weeks ago. The Padres are going to have a more difficult time achieving that goal after star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was suspended for the remainder of the season.
On a similar note, Washington continues to struggle as it looks towards the future. The Nationals have emptied the cupboard in a rebuilding process, so they are simply hoping to find some young talent that can be useful in future seasons. They have not won consecutive games since July 26, going 5-15 in their 20 games since then.
Trying to turn things around for his team, Paolo Espino is making his 13th start and 33rd appearance this season. He is carrying a disappointing 0-5 record with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP over 81.1 innings pitched while striking out 61. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks across 5.2 frames against San Diego on Sunday.
On the other side, Blake Snell is kicking things off for the San Diego Padres, making this his 16th start of the season. Snell holds a 5-6 record with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 78.2 innings pitched while striking out 105. He allowed 3 hits and not a single walk across 6 scoreless innings against Washington on Sunday.
