For the Washington Nationals, the season is close to being over, but today they’ll be kicking off a two-game set against the Seattler Mariners at T-Mobile Park. The Nats enter the series in last place of the National League East, 38 games behind the New York Mets, and 26.0 games behind in the NL Wild Card standings. On the other hand, the Seattle Mariners are right in the thick of the American League WC chase, currently holding the third position.
Not much has gone well this season for Washington, as they have the worst record in baseball and are last in team ERA with 5.61. However, the club has an opportunity to play spoiler down the stretch, having dealt the San Diego Padres a bit of a blow over the weekend, taking two of the four games. They are now 3-4 against the Padres over the last 12 days. Also, the Nationals are last in home runs allowed at 185, an average of nearly 1.5 home runs given up per game.
Now looking at the Mariners, they were riding high after sweeping a three-game set from the Los Angeles Angels last week, but then dropped two of three in Oakland, games they surely should have won. Seattle holds the final WC spot in the American League, 2.5 games ahead of both Minnesota and Baltimore. However, they have to be looking at these games against Washington as must-wins, as they need both victories to keep some distance between them and their challengers.
Seattle is sending veteran Robbie Ray to the mound, who is making his 25th start of the season. The 30-year-old holds a 9-8 record with a 3.87 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP over 142 innings pitched while striking out 166. The Nats reply back with Erick Fedde, who is making his 20th start of the season. Fedde carries a 5-7 record with a 4.95 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP over 92.2 innings pitched while striking out 70.
