When the teams met on Sunday at Shell Energy Stadium, Minnesota United’s defense let them down once more as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Houston Dynamo. Experienced midfielder Robin Lod broke the deadlock in the 70th minute to put the visitors on track for a much-needed victory after a rather boring first half. However, Sebastian Ferreira’s goal in the 82nd minute forced a sharing of the spoils. Since winning 3-1 at home against Sporting Kansas City on June 2, Minnesota United has now lost eight straight games and collected only two of a potential 24 points. The Loons have struggled recently, conceding 29 goals and failing to keep a clean sheet in their last 15 games since defeating Charlotte FC 2-0 at Bank of America Stadium in April.
D.C. Analysis: Coming off a 2-1 win
In contrast, DC United displayed a strong team effort this past weekend as they overcame Nashville 2-1 at Audi Field by coming back from a deficit. Colombian striker Cristian Dajome turned the tide of the match in the second half by scoring twice in a five-minute span, after trailing to Tyler Boyd’s goal in the 19th minute. Under-fire head coach Troy Lesesne was greatly relieved by this, since the Black-and-Red had lost eight of their previous 11 games and drawn three before barely defeating Atlanta United 3-2 in May. With 23 points from 24 league games, DC United is now two points above the bottom-dwelling Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference rankings.
